The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the current regulatory body of the Internet.

<snip>

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a technical coordination body for the Internet. Created in October 1998 by a broad coalition of the Internet's business, technical, academic, and user communities, ICANN is assuming responsibility for a set of technical functions previously performed under U.S. government contract by IANA and other groups.

Specifically, ICANN coordinates the assignment of the following identifiers that must be globally unique for the Internet to function:

  • Internet domain names
  • IP address numbers
  • protocol parameter and port numbers

In addition, ICANN coordinates the stable operation of the Internet's root server system.

As a non-profit, private-sector corporation, ICANN is dedicated to preserving the operational stability of the Internet; to promoting competition; to achieving broad representation of global Internet communities; and to developing policy through private-sector, bottom-up, consensus-based means. ICANN welcomes the participation of any interested Internet user, business, or organization.

The Internet is Global!
You will see this material again

ICANN had a rocky start. It has done a couple of things of interest to everyone who wants to play on the web.

They opened up the Domain Registration Process, so you are not at the mercy of the Network Solutions, who recently is taking the position that your domain name is not yours, nor can you do anything with it, like sell it, change registrars, trademark it or a number of things that make your domain name and the resultant websites unique.

This "policy" flies in the face of the fact that over 10 Billion dollars have been spent recently to buy internet property of one sort or another, from companies to just domain names.

In a recent court case, a U.S District Court Judge says ICANN doesn't play in Illinois.

This silliness illustrates two important points: a justice of the peace working out of a trailer park in some small town can be pursuaded to issue injunctions and other impediments to your freedom by a penstroke and a fast talking lawyer.
The other point is the Internet is is a new class of property and rules and regulations about domain name ownership, trademarks, intellectual property, privacy, taxation, jurisdiction, local, state, federal and International laws will need reexamination.

ICANN also created an forum for contested domain names to avoid litigation through an arbitration process and protect the rights of everyone, business or personal. It is working, time will tell how well.

Recently ICANN announced that it was beginning the process of electing 5 At Large Board Members:
Call for Recommendations and Expressions of Interest

I am beginning the process of campaigning for one of these spots.

This is my Internet, This is Your Internet.

If elected, one of my first suggestions will be to run the business of ICANN across the Internet, not in Eygpt, Japan or anywhere else. I will sit in this same chair I am using to write this, and will save ICANN up $1 Million Dollars (which is their suggested budget for the coming year) in travel expenses and hotel rooms. The business of the internet can be done on the Internet.
