An Open Letter to Adobe Systems Incorporated

Your prosecution of Dmitry Sklyarov under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, is the most ill advised misstep you could have possibly made as a company who plans to profit from software products used by people on the Internet.

Adobe had a fine reputation as a producer of the Acrobat product. This product allowed creation of documents that were portable across computer systems and have become a de facto standard for production and retrival of true copies of documents. With your free Acrobat reader, it has become the standard by which other products are measured.

Photoshop, Illustrator and Pagemaker are very good tools. But they are not the only tools out there.

Because of your response to Dmitry Sklyarov's presentation with his arrest for pointing out the flaws in your eBook reader, under the guise of protecting your rights, I will share the following with you.

As human beings we have rights. It says so here:

Article 19: Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

UNITED NATIONS Universal Declaration of Human Rights NEW YORK 10 December 1948

This declaration has been around for a while. These rights have been paid for by the blood and lives of individuals and nations who believe in these freedoms. Your existence as a company is a direct result of these freedoms.

Your violation of Dmitry Sklyarov's freedom of speech, by his arrest and hiding behind the Digital Millenium Copyright Act or as a poster at Metafilter put it (Demented Megalomaniacal Corporate Accomodation) which is another word for corporate welfare, requires a response.

Monday Morning I will buy ONE (1) share of your stock. Under the rules and regulations of the Securities and Exchange Commission, as a Publically traded company, you will be required to send me an annual report and will have to invite me to shareholders meetings. I will be advising every one who reads this to do the same.

My goal is simple, I will cause you to re-examine your prejudices and find them surmountable. In plain english, I will change the way you do business.

I am boycotting your products and am advising everyone else within the sight of these words to do the same. Before you brush this off as the ravings of a guy with an internet connection and a website, let me advise you that I am not alone.

Since July 17th, the following sites have been created.

Free Dmitry Sklyarov

Boycott Adobe

I list these two as a starting point for you to get the idea that you have really, really made the worst mistake of your corporate life.

See you at the next shareholders meeting!
