Kitty Mead

Kitty Mead is good news. Thought, Word and Deed. A visual artist whose creations fill your browser.

About you

What did you do before the Web?

Always something obsessive. Tropical fish keeping... had 6 large tanks running all over the house. Largest was a 90 gal. tank with South American Cichlids. One tank was a saltwater tank, with just Lenny the lionfish as its tenant... had to go to the ER one time when he stung me. Wasn't his fault, I just got too close to him when I was cleaning the tank. Even went to a "Cichlid Convention." Fishies were my babies.

Got obsessed with cooking vegetarian meals and exercising. That was fun. Wish I would have retained a little bit of that one. Now I've gone to the complete opposite end - I sit at my desk all day and hardly cook at all!

For a paycheck, I've saved lives as a respiratory therapist (still do, part time), tended bar, and managed a gas station. Also hitch-hiked myself around the USA. No money in that one, just a million stories to tell my grandchildren!

How did you find the web?

Like many parents, I bought my daughter a computer in '95, and wound up playing and learning and discovering how to make things work on it myself.

Why are you here?

I live here. I love it. It's all I do. The web gives me 73% of all I need in life. (I have to tell you, when I first answered this question, I started out at 90%... then the more I thought about it, the lower the percentage went!) Guess there are a few more things in life that sustain me.

Methods of production

What do you use to create your sites?

Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, HomeSite, and NetObjects Fusion MX. Now before anyone has a conniption fit about NOF, I have to tell you - it's not as messy as you all think. (I always feel the need to defend it, since some 'hard-core' people always seem to have bad things to say about it)

They've come a long way since version 3.0. My pages almost always turn out the way I want them to (cross-browser viewable) and, being the non-technical type o' thinker that I am, allows me to focus on the pretty side of my sites.

I guess it's really not important - since it works for me, and produces the results I want - that's all that matters.

About the Web

What do you see as the greatest strengths of the web?

Communicating with people around the world. Helping, sharing, and learning. Anyone can have it. Anyone can participate.

What do you see as the greatest dangers?

The dark alleys... the perverts and lurkers and hackers. There's one in every crowd.

What would you say to folks who want to work the web?

Go for it! Why not? If it feels good and makes you happy... just try to be a nice person along the way and do it.
